Originally constructed as a home and mill by wealthy businessman Joshua Bates in 1861, the Heritage House Museum was passed down through generations until it was eventually purchased by the Corporation of the Town of Smiths Falls in 1977 and restored to its former glory.
The museum itself focuses on the lives of original owner Joshua Bathes, depicting middle-class life in the area from 1865-1875. Exhibits showcase 8 period rooms replicating the style and trends of the era, in addition to unique mirror-facing image facades, an indoor brick bake oven and a two-story privy. Exhibitions change year-round, so there’s always something exciting happening at the museum.
Gardens surrounding the museum make a perfect location for a picnic, and it’s a quick stroll down to the Rideau Canal and Old Sly’s Lockstation.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, the man-made Rideau Canal has played an important role in the expansion of Canada, as its creation connected more Ontario Lakes to the outward flowing St. Lawrence River without crossing through the United States. The canal today is famously runs through the city of Ottawa, often photographed in the winter, populated with skaters and riverside shops.

Our Smiths Falls hotel is located near the Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario, one of the top attractions in our Rideau Canal town!
Thanks to the Rideau Canal, Smiths Falls became a booming industry town, and as a result, was chosen to be a division point on the Canadian Pacific Railway’s mainline from Montreal to Toronto. In 1912, a second railway, the Canadian Northern Railway constructed a station in Smiths Falls, thus cementing Smiths Falls as a key town in Canada’s railway history.
The Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario features exhibitions that explain the history and importance of Canada’s railways. With over 10,000 artifacts, archival and library materials, in addition to a collection of rolling stock and inspection vehicles, guests can get a comprehensive understanding of these amazing vehicles. Not just for train enthusiasts, exhibits give an in-depth look at the construction of Canada’s main railway line and how it united us as a nation.
The museum itself is housed in a former CPR station and is over 100 years old, and frequently hosts events! Celebrate Christmas at the Railway Museum and bring the whole family down to enjoy a ride on the North Pole Express!
