Explore the heart of Amish country in a Lancaster County Hot Air Balloon ride! Board your hot air balloon in Bird in Hand, and spend an hour taking in the rural sites of Intercourse, New Holland, Strasburg, Ephrata, and the Reading skyline.
My dad was born Amish and we grew up Mennonite just outside of Strasburg, PA. I have toured people around this area since I've been a kid and have always enjoyed showing off the "true" Lancaster County. Our time together will include a brief tour of the Lancaster County countryside, historic landmarks, history of the Amish, and conclude by meeting an Amish family in their home for a sit-down meal with them.
We’ll kick it off at the hub of Lancaster, our colonial square, and begin to explore the concentration of historical sites spanning three centuries – all within just a couple of blocks! The nation’s oldest continuously operating farmers market and theater, the birthplace of the Conestoga Wagon, homes of some of Lancaster’s most famous citizens, colonial churches, and much more will be brought to life through stories, characters, arts and architecture. You will learn the out-sized roll our small city played in the birth and growth of America as you stroll through charming streets and alleys and begin to understand the building blocks that take us to the present day. Sound great? Well there is still much more. After our old city history walk, we will whet our whistle at some of Lancaster’s finest craft beer establishments – and the history isn’t over. You will learn how much of our colorful past is tied to beer.

We will begin and end at Wacker Brewery. Guests will need to provide their own automobile. I will guide you via Bluetooth, including the former Sprenger Brewery, 2nd Gear Taproom, Rieker Bottling works, and other sites in between. You will experience the interwoven and fascinating connections of 19th century German Brewers to the history of Lancaster. Often described as the Munich of the U.S., Lancaster at times produced as much as 20% of the nation’s beer. Through intriguing stories and insights you will learn how industry, architecture, arts, and culture enjoy a rich and symbiotic relationship with Lager Beer. You’ll visit catacombs and resurrected breweries, the unlikely industrial site that drove German immigration, the original saloon of one of the most prominent breweries of the time, and the literal end of the line for prohibition trickery. And just to make it interesting, we will be sampling the fruits of 165 years of experience along the way!
